Get Involved

The public has a huge role in stamping out puppy mills. Check out this page to learn what you can do to stop the cycle of cruelty!

Don't Shop, Adopt!
To start, never buy your dog from a pet store. If you can, take the HSUS Pledge to Adopt at http://stoppuppymills.org/. Adopting from your local shelter is best, but if you absolutely can't get a rescue dog, buying your dog from a small responsible breeder may be another option. To ensure that the breeder is genuine, inspect the facilities and see both parent dogs. Do your research to make sure your dog won't be coming from a puppy mill. Think carefully before you buy-- don't buy on impulse! For puppy-buying tips, visit http://stoppuppymills.org/puppy_buying_tips.html.

Make Your Voice Heard
If you want to take your action further, you can write to your legislators about the issue of puppy mills and encourage them to create a bill. First, check to see if your state has any laws regulating large-scale breeders at http://gateway.hsus.org/spm/bigpicture/index.cfm. If not, ask your district representative(s) and senator to consider introducing legislation. You can also help by spreading the word about puppy mills and contacting pet stores that sell puppies in your area. Let them know that you won't shop there until they stop selling sick puppies!

You can also help spread the word by telling your familiy and friends about puppy mills.
